BY Pat Grandma

Thumbelina

A woman who longs for a child gets a barleycorn from a witch. After planting it, a beautiful big red flower blooms, and Thumbelina, who is no bigger than a thumb, is born in the flower. Her peaceful life is broken when an ugly toad steals her and wants her to marry its son. Fortunately, the fish in the water take pity on her and bite off the stem of the lily pad where she is placed, allowing her to drift away with the current. Later, Thumbelina is captured by a chafer but is abandoned in the forest because the chafer's friends dislike her. She survives by drinking dew and eating nectar. When winter comes, she seeks refuge with a field mouse. The field mouse persuades her to marry the wealthy mole. Though she is unwilling—she is eager for the sunshine and flowers outside—she has to agree. Before the wedding, she meets the swallow she once saved. The swallow takes her to a beautiful country. There, on a gorgeous flower, she meets a flower fairy prince who is as small as her. The two fall in love and get married, and Thumbelina becomes the flower queen, living a happy life of freedom and warmth ever after.
