stone soup

A group of hungry travelers (in some versions, it is a single soldier or monk) come to a small village. The villagers, who are poor and wary of strangers, are unwilling to share any food with them. The travelers do not get discouraged. They find a large cauldron, fill it with water, and put a smooth stone into it, then start to boil it.
